I’ve talked about the shoddy work my Condo’s management company has paid for in the past. I just noticed something new, and guys... I’ll never be able to unsee this.
Here are three pictures. See if you can spot what bothers me. And y es, this newly built staircase in an area where $400k for a condo is cheap is in fact finished.

So flat fronts, one angling out, and several beveled top and bottom?
Seems like that would probably violate some building code too by making the step profile inconsistent, though maybe the difference is small enough not to matter.
Personally I’m also irrationally bothered by having open steps that only have that tiny gap between the steps . I can imagine it’s desirable if they get wet or whatever, but it just looks wrong to me.

Apparently the solution is that you need to bid on the next construction project at your condo. It’s abundantly obvious you don’t need any actual construction knowledge to complete the job.

Oh hey, it must be the same mouthbreathers who made a staircase for me for our new catwalk.
I love it when the steps and the rails have different inclines so I can feel like I’m descending while I’m ascending.....and I will be descending when the shitty welds break and I fall through it!
We ended up suing in small claims and got a new one built. Good luck with yours.

Looks par for the course with the talent base around here. And with real estate and related trades holding such economic and political influence in this area, you’ll just have to live with it.
Probably not better elsewhere in the country, either. I remember looking at my friend’s nearly new house in suburban Atlanta - probably shoddier than a local equivalent (of course, it also cost literally 1/5th the price, but when land is worthless, there you go).

I suppose they're useful for sweeping debris off, but it's also an exterior staircase

Why is every HOA and property management company in Washington completely incompetent? I’ve never seen anything like it elsewhere. I DREAM of the ones I dealt with in California because they were simply competent and I had no clue how lucky I was that they were.

Is the back side of the step beveled properly? Did they just install 180 degrees out, for some reason?

If I stay here another year, with God as my witness I will publish a large coffee table picture book detailing the various projects that have gone wrong.

This walkway is totally covered so I doubt water is a concern. I agree, either go uncovered or better yet, fully covered. It also bothers me that the runners aren’t painted to match.... Well. Anything. The building is white, the stones are G rey, the walkway is made of a blue, man-made plank and the doors are maroon....

Ha. Funny enough, today at work I walked on a staircase that *looked* fine, but each step was noticeably angled, and they definitely did not match each other. Must have been built by the contractor who threw out his levels because “the ground isn’t level, it’s just a waste to try to change anything” (yes, I heard those exact words from a guy in charge of a 5 million custom home)
I don’t have to worry about shitty welds at least. For better or worse, I could take apart the entire railing, walkway and staircase in an hour with $10 worth of tools

I re member in Bangkok, my first airbnb—a literal high rise penthouse for all intents and purposes—had a linear drain against the wall of the shower pan, opposite the glass door. Unfortunately, the shower pan sloped *away* from the drain, and towards the door. Did I mention there was zero threshold? So that beautiful bathroom with a flush entry to the shower flooded with 2 inches of water after every shower, and took a good hour to drain into god-knows-where . Drove me crazy, but the owner said it was normal and I was paying like $30 a night for a 40th floor penthouse in the heart of Bangkok s o...

We had a new guy move in two months ago, and he was backing in both of his vehicles. Then due to snow, a lot more people started backing in their vehicles. Fast forward to this week, about half the residents have been backing in since then, which ultimately is much safer for everybody.
Last night I saw tickets on about twenty windows from HOA management for backing in, as “the exhaust fumes kill the plants”. Especially ironic as one of the offenders was a model 3.

This is how they secured the railing to the ground, so... I’m not going to give them the benefit of the doubt.

So our standards are maybe just higher than the developing world. Be proud! Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a similar setup in at least one local “luxury” property.

I’m just consistently amazed at how people can make something as crucial as a set of stairs, look at their work, see how fucked up it is, and still tell themselves “Yep, that’s a job well done right there!”. Doubly so in this day and age of OSHA fines and violations. I honestly had half a mind to stage an employee trip scenario to trigger an OSHA report to get them to refund our money since they said they refused to fix it.

Definitely sounds like Washington and an incompetent HOA or property management company.
